Global-Scale EAM: How TotalEnergies Is Building Its Industrial Backbone with IFS and Accenture

It's 2am on an offshore platform off the coast of Angola, in production since the 1980s. An operator needs to replace a part on a compressor: he has the skills, but the procedure is in one tool, the drawing in a second, and the failure history in a third. This is the scene Ludovic Ponthier, Presales Director (IFS) used to open the Tech For Industry Show panel dedicated to TotalEnergies' OneAsset project, alongside Florence Narboux, Practice Leader Intelligent Asset Management (Accenture) and Idar Ait Bengrir, Change, Adoption & Deploy Manager (TotalEnergies). The problem isn't skill — it's fragmented data.

OneAsset: Far More Than a Maintenance Tool

A Pillar of the "ERP of the Future" Program

OneAsset is part of a broader transformation program at TotalEnergies, made up of three projects: OneAsset, the industrial backbone; One FiCoProc, the SAP migration for finance, procurement and management control; and One Master Data, which safeguards data quality. The ambition: harmonize and digitize all maintenance, inspection, production and turnaround processes.

Three Industrial Worlds, One Core Model

The scope covers the group's three major industrial activities: exploration-production (offshore and onshore platforms), refining-chemicals, and power generation, including offshore wind. From the maintenance manager of a 300-person site to a platform operator, the goal is a single business core model: the same maintenance order process for everyone, the same tool to track an offshore production procedure or a lubrication plan at a refinery — powered by IFS Cloud and associated solutions.

Why IFS: An Evaluation Led by Operations Teams

28 Key Processes Tested in the Field

The evaluation covered 28 key processes, involving headquarters, subsidiaries, business-line IT — down to tests run by operations teams themselves. Four strengths made the difference: out-of-the-box coverage of all business lines, a highly configurable solution (fields, business rules, process automation, without rewrites at each release), a fully open data model aligned with the group's data strategy, and a genuine trajectory partnership shaping the vendor's roadmap.

An Extended Platform, Connected to the SAP Backbone

Beyond curative, predictive and condition-based maintenance, the platform covers inspection, subcontractor management, shutdown (turnaround) campaigns and project-mode change management — all tightly connected to the SAP finance backbone.

Integration, the Project's Critical Path

300 Applications Analyzed, 35 Flows with SAP

To define the target state, teams studied more than 300 applications orbiting maintenance: which would be replaced, which would be connected. The major challenge: the connection with the SAP ECC to S/4HANA migration — operational tracking in IFS, procurement, supply chain and spare parts in SAP. To date, 35 interface flows between the two systems and 44 business applications need to be connected to ensure the end-to-end process.

Harmonizing Data: From 9 Models to One

Another structural challenge: maintenance processes currently live across 7 different data models in SAP and 2 in Maximo. Under these conditions, comparing a KPI calculated in Denmark and in France is impossible. Going forward, identical processes and harmonized data will enable operational and financial maintenance management with metrics that are finally shared.

Deploying Across 88 Sites in 45 Countries: Method and Timeline

A Scoping Phase That Involves the Field

From the scoping phase onward, 104 processes were defined with Local Business Units from every geography and activity, present at the workshops — confirming that the solution would cover every business function while harmonizing practices. The solution will be used daily by more than 13,000 people, including the contractor ecosystem, a pillar of TotalEnergies' operations.

4 Pilots, Then a 7-Year Rollout

The project, launched in September, aims for a first go-live within a year, four pilots within two years, then the deployment of remaining sites planned over 7 years — a pace dictated by a genuinely industrial constraint: it's impossible to migrate a site during a major shutdown, so each deployment is fitted into production and maintenance plans.

Accenture: From Architecture to Change Management

Involved from the scoping phase, Accenture leads the solution's definition, architecture validation, data cleansing ahead of migration — notably standardizing equipment taxonomy: knowing that the pump installed in Nigeria is the same as the one in stock in France and used in Denmark — and change management, adapted to an industrial "blue-collar" world, far from tertiary ERP standards.

AI in the Service of Maintenance and Data

Co-Innovation: Deduplicating Fault Reports

At a large Oil & Gas site, several operators may report the same fault on the same equipment. A tool co-developed with TotalEnergies uses AI to detect and deduplicate these multiple reports and generate only a single intervention, while still respecting each individual report. IFS also natively embeds AI into the platform, including through agents.

Getting Data Into Shape: AI Under Human Validation

In response to an audience question: it's impossible to manually scan 17 item catalogs and the taxonomy of hundreds of thousands of pieces of equipment spread across 17 legacy systems. AI makes recommendations and groupings based on Oil & Gas taxonomy standards — but final validation always rests with the Business Process Owners. Another value lever mentioned: a single item catalog opens the door to centralized procurement.

A Business Convergence Project, Not an IT Project

The speakers' conclusion is unambiguous: OneAsset isn't an IT project, it's a business transformation and convergence project, where technology is an enabler — governed by a Design Authority where Accenture and IFS co-build arbitration scenarios and where TotalEnergies, as the business and field owner, keeps the final, informed decision.
